History
MAISON BOURREL

Built in the 1930's by M. Jean Bourrel, a local businessman who developed a millinery factory in the town, Maison Bourrel is a wonderful mixture of French Colonial style with Italian and Spanish influences. Wander through the secluded garden to the rear gate and you will find Pont Suzzane, a bridge over the river Aude built by M. Bourell so the towns people could easily reach his workshop on the other side. Examples of his hats and those of other milliners who flourished in this area at the time, can still be seen at the Museum in nearby Esperaza.

The interior of the house reflects the rich and glorious mixture of styles that were popular at the time, from the formal plaster panelled walls and marble floor in the Grande Salon and dramatic Art Nouveau dining room, to the grand bedroom suites with their double french doors and balconies providing a panoramic view to the foothills of the Pyrenees. The later addition of the front courtyard, kitchen and hall, with its oak staircase, fit seamlessly into this eclectic mix.

One of the most important houses in the Quillan, Maison Bourrel was the subject of substantial and sympathetic renovation and improvement in 2001- 2004. The scheme updated the property for modern living whilst maintaining the character and important historical features.

The works included a new roof, central heating boiler, addition of extra bathroom and toilet facilities, a pumped system supplying instant hot water any wear in the house, complete rewiring and redecorating, and a new “chefs” kitchen. The Garden was remodelled to include a pool and provide an exterior recreational and living area to take full advantage of the long hot summers.

It now provides an ideal venue for those seeking elegant and flexible accommodation, with modern facilities in beautiful and graceful surroundings. Ideally placed to take full advantage of the climate, sites and facilities this attractive area has to offer.

Work to restore and maintain this beautiful house is a continuous process.
